Vietnam faces resource and workforce challenges for economic growth

A national workshop in Hanoi addressed the challenges of mobilizing resources for Vietnam's economic development in a new era. Experts noted that while investment capital, human resources, and digital infrastructure have expanded, the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth rate for 2021–2025 is projected at 2.91%, showing little change from previous periods. Key bottlenecks include a shortage of trained labor, which currently accounts for less than one-third of the workforce, and a gap in converting resources into high-productivity sectors.

In the environmental sector, discussions focused on the impact of mining, which is the fourth largest cause of global deforestation. In Vietnam, mining contributes 4-5% of annual GDP but poses significant risks to ecosystems. Experts emphasized the need for nature-based solutions to restore forests after mining activities to potentially tap into carbon markets.

Additionally, Vietnam faces a critical shortage of specialized personnel for nuclear technology. Dr. Trần Chí Thành of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute highlighted that while plans for atomic energy application exist, implementation is hindered by funding shortages and a lack of specific technical requirements across ministries. A single nuclear power plant is estimated to require roughly 1,000 workers to operate effectively.
