Vietnam faces rising online scams and declining traditional market sales
Online fraud in Vietnam is becoming increasingly sophisticated, utilizing evolving tactics to deceive victims. Scammers are employing various methods, including fake prize notifications, high-profit livestream sales, and impersonating e-commerce platforms for product returns. Some schemes use artificial intelligence to mimic voices and images to build trust. Recent examples include fraudulent claims of winning high-value electronics and livestream scams involving pearl products that promise high returns but demand large fees for liquidity and currency conversion.
Simultaneously, traditional markets in major cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are experiencing a significant decline in activity. Many vendors at prominent locations, such as An Dong and Tan Binh markets, are closing stalls or leaving the profession due to low revenue. At Pham Van Hai market, purchasing power has reportedly dropped by approximately 70% compared to stable periods. This downturn contrasts with the rapid growth of e-commerce; data shows that total sales on major platforms like Shopee, TikTok Shop, Lazada, and Tiki reached 291.6 trillion VND in the first half of 2026, a 44.11% increase year-over-year.
