Vietnam farmers adopt rice-shrimp model to adapt to salinity

In rural southern Vietnam, a production model combining rice cultivation with shrimp farming is being used to adapt to changing freshwater and saltwater cycles. This strategy allows farmers to utilize the same land throughout different seasons by alternating crops based on water salinity levels.

During the freshwater season, rice is planted, while the land is transitioned to shrimp farming when salinity increases. In Ca Mau province, a major shrimp-producing region, this model serves as an adaptation strategy against environmental and economic conditions. The region manages over 435,000 hectares dedicated to shrimp production.

The system promotes a circular production model, as rice residues like straw can be reused as organic matter in agricultural and aquaculture processes. While the scheme can increase annual income and reduce costs, producers face challenges including shrimp diseases, environmental fluctuations, and market instability. Efforts are underway to integrate technology and improve water management to strengthen the industry.
