Thailand defeats Vietnam 2-0 to reach FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final

Thailand secured a 2-0 victory over Vietnam in a Group B match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 held in Indonesia. Goals were scored by Sarach Yooyen in the 10th minute and Chaiyaphon Otton in stoppage time. The win guarantees Thailand a spot in the tournament final.

Vietnam's defeat was compounded by the absence of key striker Nguyen Xuan Son, who is sidelined with a thigh injury. Vietnam's head coach, Kim Sang-sik, took full responsibility for the loss, citing tactical experiments and the team's struggle to control the midfield as contributing factors.

Despite the win, Thailand faced criticism from domestic fans for a highly defensive, “parking the bus” style of play. Meanwhile, the match highlighted a generational shift, featuring the veteran Chanathip Songkrasin captaining Thailand against Vietnam's young captain, Dinh Bac.

In other tournament news, Pakistan is participating in the competition as an invited guest, marking their first appearance in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament final. They are currently competing in Division 1 of Group B.
