Vietnam health experts warn fruit‑heavy diet may cause fatty liver, diabetes

Medical specialists in Vietnam have observed a growing weight‑loss trend in which individuals cut staple foods such as rice and replace meals with large quantities of whole fruit or fruit juices. Doctors at the Central Endocrine Hospital, including Dr. Nguyễn Giang Nam, report that many patients who follow this habit develop fatty liver, insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides and disturbances in blood glucose. The excess natural sugars in fruit—especially fructose, which is processed mainly in the liver—can be converted into fat when consumed beyond the body’s needs, creating a cycle that increases the likelihood of type‑2 diabetes even among previously healthy people.

The experts caution that while fruit provides vitamins, minerals and fiber, excessive intake over prolonged periods can lead to serious metabolic disorders and undermine diabetes control for those already diagnosed.
