Vietnam health reports on watermelon benefits and flu risks

Watermelon, which is 90‑92% water, provides natural diuretic effects and contains L‑citrulline that can be converted to nitric oxide, helping to dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Studies cited by U.S. agricultural data and Dutch researchers suggest that regular consumption may indirectly protect kidney function by improving hydration and reducing hypertension, though clinical trials have not yet proven a direct preventive effect on chronic kidney disease. Caution is advised for patients with advanced kidney impairment because the fruit’s potassium content (about 174 mg per 155 g) could exacerbate hyperkalemia.

Health officials in Vietnam warn that seasonal influenza can quickly become severe, especially for older adults and individuals with underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease, or liver disease. Recent cases include a 63‑year‑old woman with hypertension and diabetes who died after rapid progression to coma, and a 24‑year‑old man who developed severe pneumonia, myocarditis, and pericardial effusion before recovering after intensive care. Doctors stress that self‑medication, especially misuse of antibiotics and corticosteroids, can worsen outcomes, urging prompt medical attention for flu symptoms in high‑risk groups.
