Father Donates Kidney to Son in Quang Ninh, Vietnam

On 31 July, a 60‑year‑old father in Quảng Ninh province voluntarily donated one of his kidneys to his 32‑year‑old son, who was in end‑stage chronic kidney disease and required haemodialysis three times a week. The operation, performed by the surgical team at Vietnam‑Sweden Hospital in Uông Bí, was the centre’s eighth kidney transplant since it began its programme a little over a year ago.

Both donor and recipient were cleared after comprehensive medical and immunological assessments, and the four‑hour surgery proceeded without complications. The transplanted kidney began functioning immediately, with the recipient producing urine shortly after reperfusion. Post‑operative monitoring shows both patients are stable and continue recovery under regular follow‑up.

The successful transplant highlights the hospital’s growing expertise in a complex urological procedure and expands local treatment options for end‑stage renal patients in Quảng Ninh and neighbouring provinces, reducing the need for referral to central‑level hospitals.
