Vietnam implements English as a second language in schools

Vietnam is moving toward a strategic initiative to establish English as a second language in schools. The Ministry of Education and Training is currently seeking feedback on a draft plan that aims to create an environment where English is used for teaching, communication, management, and educational activities, rather than simply increasing English class hours.

In Khanh Hoa province, a specific implementation plan for the 2025–2035 period has been issued with an estimated budget of 69 billion VND. The province aims to train 100 teachers in secondary English degrees, enhance the language skills of 1,200 subject teachers, and equip 72 schools with modern language facilities. Pilot programs will include teaching Mathematics and Natural Sciences in English at a minimum of 10 secondary and high schools.

However, the transition faces significant challenges. Experts note that many subject teachers lack the English proficiency required to teach their specialized fields. There are concerns that if both teachers and students lack sufficient language skills, lessons may devolve into lengthy translation exercises, potentially undermining the core objectives of the primary subjects. Additionally, there is a risk that schools might prioritize meeting administrative requirements over creating a genuine, effective language-learning environment.
