Vietnam increases electricity imports from Laos and China

Vietnam has significantly increased its electricity imports from Laos and China to meet record-breaking domestic demand. During the first seven months of the year, imported electricity reached 7.21 billion kWh, a nearly 70% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge has raised the proportion of imported power in the national system from approximately 2.3% to 3.5%.

According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the increased reliance on imports is driven by rising electricity consumption, particularly in Northern Vietnam, where rapid load growth has placed pressure on local supply and transmission capabilities. Imported power serves to supplement production and help balance supply and demand during peak periods.

Vietnam has approved plans to import electricity from 47 projects in Laos, with a total capacity of 8,260 MW. Currently, 2,379 MW of these projects are commercially operational, while the remaining 5,881 MW are expected to come online between 2026 and 2030. Notable projects include the 600 MW Monsoon wind power plant in Laos.
