Vietnam infrastructure projects face material shortages and delays
Vietnam's major infrastructure and expressway projects are facing significant delays due to critical shortages of construction materials and ongoing land clearance issues. In the north, several expressway projects, including the Ninh Binh - Hai Phong and Hanoi Capital Ring Road 4 segments, are struggling with massive deficits of sand, soil, and stone. The Ministry of Construction has highlighted that these shortages threaten completion timelines for projects planned through 2026.
In the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, the supply of sand and stone remains a major bottleneck. Reports indicate that Ho Chi Minh City faces a potential shortage of over 14 million cubic meters of construction sand. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has directed provinces to proactively secure material mine reserves for long-term projects spanning 2030-2045 to prevent future supply gaps.
Additionally, localized projects are also stalling. A critical landslide remediation project in Hoa Binh is behind schedule, with the contractor, Hoang Son Construction Investment Energy Trade JSC, citing financial difficulties as the reason for failing to begin work on cleared land.
