Vietnam internet connectivity impacted by four submarine cable failures

Four international submarine fiber optic cable systems connecting Vietnam to the global internet—SJC2, AAE-1, AAG, and IA—are currently experiencing technical issues. This disruption affects international traffic and access to services with servers located outside of Vietnam.

On August 25, 2026, the large-scale SJC2 and AAE-1 systems failed almost simultaneously. The SJC2 fault was identified near Chung Hom Kok, Hong Kong, while the AAE-1 connection was lost due to a fault in segment S1. These incidents occurred while technical issues on the AAG cable remained unresolved. Additionally, the Asia-India (IA) cable has reported signal interruptions.

The SJC2 cable, which has a design capacity of 126 Tbps, involves investment from VNPT with a landing station in Quy Nhon. The AAE-1 cable, connecting Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe with a 40 Tbps capacity, is managed by Viettel in Vietnam via a $50 million investment.

Repairs for the IA cable are expected to begin in early September, but specific schedules for SJC2, AAE-1, and AAG have not yet been confirmed. While domestic services and websites hosted within Vietnam remain unaffected, users may experience localized slowdowns when accessing social media, streaming services, or online games during peak hours. Domestic internet service providers have activated technical response plans to mitigate the impact.
