Vietnam introduces new regulations on information access and fake news prevention

Vietnam is implementing new regulations regarding information access and the prevention of fake news.

Under Circular 126/2026/TT-BTC issued by the Ministry of Finance, individuals and organizations requesting information must pay actual costs for printing, copying, photographing, and sending information. These fees will be managed according to state budget laws and will take effect on September 1, 2026. Certain specific requests for information remain exempt from these costs.

Additionally, Decree 328/2026/NĐ-CP, which focuses on combating fake news and false information, will take effect on October 5, 2026. A key feature of this decree is the integration of the VNeID electronic identification application, allowing citizens to report misinformation directly and securely. Other reporting methods include official web portals, dedicated hotlines, in-person visits, and written documents. Reports involving potential criminal violations will be transferred to investigative agencies for processing under the Penal Code.
