Vietnam Politburo issues directive on environmental security

The Politburo of Vietnam has issued Directive No. 15-CT/TW regarding the assurance of environmental security during the country’s new development period. Signed by Politburo member and Standing Secretary Tran Cam Tu, the directive defines environmental security as a state of stability and sustainability where risks are identified, predicted, and controlled to prevent harm to national security, human security, and social order.

The directive notes that while progress has been made, challenges remain in governance, institutional frameworks, and inter-agency coordination. Environmental risks are increasingly characterized as interdisciplinary, cross-regional, and transboundary, including issues such as pollution, resource degradation, climate change, and extreme weather events. These factors are identified as potential threats to national strategic autonomy and competitiveness.

To address these risks, the Politburo calls for strengthened Party leadership and enhanced awareness across all levels of government and social organizations. The People's Public Security forces are designated to play a core role in advising and implementing these security measures to ensure a foundation for rapid and sustainable national development.
