Vietnam launches first domestically produced primary aluminium ingots

Vietnam has begun commercial production of primary aluminium after the Dak Nong Aluminium Electrolysis Plant manufactured its first ingots and billets. The plant, designed for 450,000 tonnes a year, started Phase 1 (150,000 t) in 2026 and plans to reach full capacity by the first quarter of 2027.

A launch ceremony in Lâm Đồng province was attended by senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister Phan Văn Giang and local leaders. Stavian Industrial Metal received the inaugural batch and will distribute the product domestically and to overseas markets. The government expects the new supply chain to cut aluminium imports by about US$1.5 billion annually, create roughly 3,500 jobs, and strengthen Vietnam’s self‑sufficiency in key manufacturing sectors.

The first billets were reported to have a purity of 99.71 %, marking the country’s first mastery of aluminium‑electrolysis technology and completing the bauxite‑alumina‑aluminium value chain.
