Vietnam launches national agricultural traceability system

Vietnam has activated a nationwide agricultural traceability platform that consolidates data on more than 18,500 products from 170 enterprises across 24 provinces. The system creates a unified database intended to increase transparency, improve food‑safety monitoring, and boost the competitiveness of Vietnamese farm, forestry and fishery goods in export markets.

Officials say the database will help Vietnam meet the European Union Deforestation Regulation, which from Dec. 30 2026 will require coffee, rubber and timber exported to the EU to be traceable to individual plots. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung linked the traceability push to the country’s goal of exceeding $74 billion in agricultural exports in 2026. Experts highlighted the need for comprehensive cultivation‑area data, mandatory traceability roadmaps for key commodities, and mechanisms for farmers and firms to share data with regulators.

Challenges include integrating millions of smallholder farms into the system and ensuring long‑term farmer participation. The government is considering expanding the platform to cover public services, allowing real‑time updates and online reporting to support digital transformation and sustain export growth.
