Vietnam livestock industry grows nearly 5% in first nine months of 2026

Vietnam's livestock industry recorded a growth rate of 4.98% during the first nine months of 2026. According to the Department of Livestock Production, total meat production reached 6.83 million tons, a 5% increase, while egg production hit 15.7 billion units and fresh milk production reached approximately 1 million tons.

Export values for livestock products are estimated at 564 million USD, representing a 24.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The sector is expected to contribute approximately 27% to the agricultural GDP, maintaining its status as a primary pillar alongside the fisheries sector.

Despite this growth, the industry faces significant challenges, including rising input costs, disease risks, and climate change. There is a notable shift in market dynamics as industrial farming expands; while small-scale households once provided 70% of production a decade ago, they now account for only about 30% due to limited capital, technology, and scale compared to large-scale enterprises.
