Vietnam man receives Da Vinci robotic surgery for stomach cancer

A 62‑year‑old man from Lâm Đồng, Vietnam, who had suffered gastritis for more than 20 years, was diagnosed with a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach after worsening upper‑abdominal pain and fullness. Endoscopic examination revealed a malignant lesion at the pyloric region, and biopsy confirmed cancer without evidence of liver or peritoneal metastasis.

The patient, who also has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and hypertension, was evaluated by a multidisciplinary team and underwent a Da Vinci Xi robot‑assisted gastrectomy with D2 lymph‑node dissection at Tam Anh Multi‑specialty Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The procedure removed the tumor‑bearing stomach segment and 27 lymph nodes, with no intra‑operative detection of distant spread. Post‑operative care was provided in the intensive care unit, and the patient recovered well.

Dr. Đỗ Minh Hùng, director of the Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, highlighted the precision advantages of the robotic system in the confined abdominal space, noting that the three‑dimensional high‑resolution imaging and articulated instruments facilitated accurate resection and lymph‑node clearance.
