ASEAN marks 59th anniversary with global strategic pledges
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) celebrated its 59th anniversary, marked by various international commemorations and strategic pledges. Under the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together," the bloc highlighted its progress since its founding in 1967. Current milestones include the accession of Timor-Leste as the 11th member and the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. As a collective economic unit, ASEAN's GDP exceeds USD 4 trillion, making it the world's fifth-largest economy.
Member and partner nations expressed varying strategic commitments. Vietnam pledged to proactively shape regional rules and development trends. India reaffirmed its commitment through its "Act East Policy," focusing on connectivity, trade, and defense. Turkey was recently recognized as an official Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. Additionally, Cuba expressed its intention to deepen economic and trade cooperation with the region, while the Philippines, acting as the 2026 ASEAN Chair, emphasized priorities such as regional security, maritime cooperation, and climate change response.
Commemorative events were held globally, including a diplomatic gathering in Budapest, Hungary, and a unique illumination of the Qutub Minar in New Delhi, India, decorated in ASEAN colors.
