Vietnam Minister addresses biotechnology and disaster prevention funding

During the second session of the 16th National Assembly on October 31, Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Trinh Viet Hung, addressed parliamentary concerns regarding biotechnology development and climate change adaptation.

Regarding synthetic biotechnology, Minister Hung noted that the ministry has proposed regulatory frameworks aligned with Politburo resolutions and Prime Minister directives. These include schemes to develop the bio-industry for environmental protection through 2030 and specific targets for the agricultural sector. While institutional and technological conditions are considered sufficient, the Minister emphasized that rigorous implementation remains the primary challenge. Recent efforts include commissioning scientific tasks to the Vietnam National University of Agriculture and various research centers nationwide.

On the topic of disaster prevention and climate adaptation, the Minister discussed funding for infrastructure in the Mekong Delta and the North. For the Mekong Delta, central authorities allocated approximately 40 trillion VND (1.5 billion USD) for the 2021–2025 period, with 23.5 trillion VND allocated for the 2026–2031 period.
