Vietnam ministries respond to proposal to lower teacher retirement age

Vietnam's Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Education and Training have responded to a proposal from voters in Da Nang regarding the adjustment of retirement ages for educators. The proposal suggested lowering the retirement age to 55 for women and 60 for men to protect worker health, improve teaching quality, and facilitate a younger teaching workforce.

The Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that under current social insurance laws, monthly pension eligibility requires meeting specific age and contribution duration criteria to ensure the long-term sustainability of the social insurance fund.

According to the Ministry, the current retirement age framework was established through Resolution 28/2018 and institutionalized in the 2019 Labor Code. Rather than an immediate increase to 62 for men and 60 for women, the law implements a gradual increase, raising the age by three months annually for men and four months annually for women.
