Vietnam Ministry of Health issues seasonal flu warnings

The Vietnam Ministry of Health, through its Department of Preventive Medicine, has issued urgent warnings and eight specific recommendations to combat seasonal influenza. The disease, which is caused by influenza viruses, is transmitted primarily through respiratory droplets when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or speak. Risk of infection increases in crowded areas, enclosed spaces, or locations with poor ventilation.

Health officials are particularly concerned about high-risk groups, including adults over 65, children under 5, pregnant women, women who have given birth within the last two weeks, and individuals with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney failure, or liver cirrhosis. For these groups, influenza can lead to severe complications like pneumonia or respiratory failure.

To mitigate the spread, the Ministry recommends wearing masks in public, practicing frequent hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Experts emphasize that annual vaccination is the most effective preventive measure, potentially offering up to 90% protection if administered correctly. In Dong Nai province, local health authorities are also intensifying communication efforts and enhancing detection and treatment capabilities at medical facilities.
