Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade proposes direct management of EVN

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has proposed that the Government transfer Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to become an entity under the Ministry's direct management. This proposal is part of a report regarding the adjustment of Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8) and solutions to ensure electricity supply for the 2026-2030 period.

The Ministry aims to centralize resources, shorten coordination processes, and enhance the ability to implement the revised power planning. This move comes in response to rising electricity demand and delays in several power source and grid projects. The Ministry noted that Vietnam faces serious challenges regarding energy supply-demand imbalances, with net energy imports projected to remain high at approximately 43.6% of total primary energy by 2030.

Furthermore, the report highlights the need to review load demands for emerging sectors such as data centers, AI hubs, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The proposal seeks to mitigate the risk of power shortages, which could impact the national economy, particularly as the country aims for double-digit growth between 2027 and 2030.
