Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade reviews proposal to replace Vingroup LNG plant
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has reported a proposal to the Prime Minister to replace the 178,000 billion VND Hai Phong LNG thermal power plant with a renewable energy complex integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The Hai Phong LNG project is a joint venture between Vingroup and VinEnergo. It is one of 12 LNG gas power projects under Vietnam's Power Development Plan VIII. The project has already reached certain milestones, including an agreement with the US-based GE Group for gas turbine supply.
Despite the new proposal, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has recommended continuing the implementation of the gas power plant as originally approved in the national planning. A final decision on whether to proceed with the renewable energy and BESS alternative rests with the competent authorities.
