Vietnam Ministry of Public Security identifies Nguyen Van Dai as terrorist

The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has identified Nguyen Van Dai, a 57-year-old resident of Germany, as an individual engaged in terrorist activities. Dai, who uses the alias ‘Nguyen Viet Hung’, holds a central committee position within the organization Viet Tan, which the Ministry classifies as a terrorist group.

Dai has a history of legal convictions in Vietnam. In 2007, the Hanoi People's Court sentenced him to four years in prison and four years of probation for propaganda against the state. In 2018, he received a 15-year prison sentence and five years of probation for activities aimed at overthrowing the people's administration, though his sentence was suspended, allowing him to depart for Germany.

Following a warrant issued in December 2025, the Hanoi People's Court conducted an in-absentia trial on December 31, 2025. Dai was sentenced to 17 years in prison and five years of probation for making, storing, and disseminating information or materials intended to oppose the state. Authorities stated that between July and November 2025, Dai used multiple social media accounts to post content intended to defame the government and cause public alarm.
