Vietnam MoET to publicly name schools overcharging fees
The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has announced strict measures to combat illegal fee collection in schools for the upcoming academic year. According to Ngo Van Thinh, Deputy Director of the Planning and Finance Department at MoET, any educational institution found to be overcharging must have its name publicly disclosed within three days of discovery. Additionally, the responsibility of school principals will be reviewed in cases of misconduct.
School fees are categorized into tuition, service fees, educational support fees, and sponsorships. While tuition is governed by the government, provincial People's Committees have the authority to regulate service fees and educational support costs. Schools are prohibited from creating unauthorized charges or exceeding established price ceilings.
To facilitate oversight, MoET has instructed departments of education, local authorities, and school principals to provide contact numbers for reporting illegal fees or unauthorized extra tutoring. The Ministry has already received approximately 30 complaints, which are being processed and transferred to relevant local authorities for verification and handling.
