Vietnam mother Tô Thị Ty Na sentenced to life for child murder insurance fraud

Tô Thị Ty Na, a 45‑year‑old resident of Thăng Bình, Da Nang, was convicted of murdering her 5‑year‑old son, identified as N. V. H., and of defrauding life‑insurance companies to obtain more than VND 4.1 billion. She had purchased seven life‑insurance policies for her four children, paying annual premiums exceeding VND 100 million and naming herself as the beneficiary. On 2 January 2023 she killed her son, staged the scene as a drowning accident, and filed claims with Generali and FWD, which paid out the large sum that she used for personal purposes. The Da Nang People's Court sentenced her to life imprisonment for murder and an additional six years for insurance fraud. The court noted her prior theft conviction in 2008 and her financial difficulties after her husband’s death in 2020. When escorted from the courtroom she repeatedly wept, a reaction that provoked widespread public anger.

The case has drawn significant media attention in Vietnam, highlighting concerns over insurance fraud and the extreme measures taken for financial gain.
