Vietnam National Assembly opens first extraordinary session, outlines 33 legislative items

On 3 August 2026 the 16th National Assembly of Vietnam convened its first extraordinary session at the Parliament House in Hanoi. The session, organized as a concentrated meeting, is divided into two periods – 3 August to the morning of 13 August and 19 August to 24 August – and will run for about 17 days, including work on two Saturdays and two Sundays. A five‑day recess from 13 August to 18 August allows the Assembly, the Government and other bodies to review and amend draft laws and resolutions before the second period.

The Assembly will consider 33 items: 15 draft laws, 4 draft resolutions, first‑time opinions on 7 draft laws, and decisions on 7 major national issues. Highlighted legislation includes amendments to the Oil and Gas Law, Urban Development Law, Law on Public Legal Education, and laws covering customs, investment, and weapons of mass destruction. Four resolutions will be adopted, notably one establishing special mechanisms to resolve difficulties in projects for the APEC 2027 summit in Phú Quý (An Giang province) and another setting policies for handling economic‑law violations.

Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn emphasized the session’s heavy workload and its importance for institutional strengthening and socio‑economic development, noting that most major policy directions have already received Party approval.
