Vietnam national football team loses to Thailand in ASEAN Cup

The Vietnam national football team failed to reach the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final following a 0-2 defeat against Thailand in their second Group B match. Despite controlling 58% of possession and recording 12 attempts, Vietnam struggled with clinical finishing, managing only four shots on target.

A significant factor in the offensive struggle was the absence of naturalized striker Nguyễn Xuân Son, who was sidelined due to injury. His absence left a void in the attacking lineup that head coach Kim Sang-sik has yet to fill. While Vietnam attempted to increase pressure in the second half by introducing attacking players such as Nguyễn Hoàng Đức, Đỗ Hoàng Hên, and Williams Minh Hoàng, they were unable to break through Thailand's defense.

One notable moment included a goal by Nguyễn Tài Lộc in the 36th minute, which was disallowed by VAR for offside. In contrast, Thailand demonstrated higher efficiency, scoring two goals from nine attempts, seven of which were on target.
