Vietnam orders 18 Russian Yak-130M light attack aircraft

Vietnam has reportedly become the launch export customer for the Russian Yakovlev Yak-130M light attack aircraft. Following a visit by President Vladimir Putin to the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, officials disclosed an agreement for Vietnam to acquire 18 of these upgraded units.

This procurement will bring Vietnam's total Yak-130 fleet to approximately 30 aircraft, accounting for previous orders and offsetting losses from training accidents. The Yak-130M variant features significant technological upgrades over the base model, including the BRLS-130R active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, the SOLT-130K electro-optical targeting system, and R-77-1 missile capability.

The aircraft is designed to handle light strike, air policing, and counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) roles. By utilizing the Yak-130M for routine patrols and reconnaissance, the Vietnamese Air Force aims to preserve the flight hours and readiness of its high-end frontline fighters, such as the Su-30MK2, for high-threat maritime defense operations.
