Vietnam passport ranks 89th in Henley Passport Index

The latest update from the Henley Passport Index (HPI) places the Vietnamese passport at 89th globally. This ranking reflects the number of destinations Vietnamese citizens can access without a prior visa, via e-visa, visa on arrival (VOA), or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

While the ranking saw improvements earlier in 2026, reaching 84th in March, it declined to 89th between July and October. Currently, Vietnamese passport holders can access approximately 49 to 50 destinations under these eased entry conditions.

Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam remains in a lower tier compared to regional neighbors such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The HPI ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and tracks immigration policy changes across 227 countries and territories. The index focuses specifically on travel ease and does not measure a nation's overall economic power or political influence.
