Vietnam completes its first penis transplant from brain‑dead donor
On 29 July 2024, surgeons at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi performed Vietnam's first penis transplant using tissue from a brain‑dead male donor. The recipient was a 43‑year‑old man who had undergone a partial penectomy four years earlier, leaving a short remaining segment that affected his sexual function and quality of life.
A multidisciplinary team, including specialists in transplantation, andrology, microsurgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, immunology and pathology, reconstructed the urethra, corpus spongiosum and corpora cavernosa and performed microsurgical anastomosis of tiny arteries, veins and nerves. Post‑operative monitoring showed stable vital signs, good graft blood flow and no early complications. The patient is responding to anti‑rejection medication and will be followed long‑term to assess sensation, erectile function and urinary health.
The operation marks only the fifth documented penis transplant worldwide, the most recent prior case reported in 2018, highlighting a significant medical milestone for Vietnam.
