Vietnam plans restoration of Bac Hung Hai and Nhue - Day river systems
Vietnam is developing a pilot project to restore the degraded, depleted, and polluted Bac Hung Hai, Nhue - Day, and Ngu Huyen Khe river systems. Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung, the plan aims to achieve several key environmental and infrastructure goals by 2035.
One primary objective is to restore surface water through gravity-based solutions, diverting water from the Red River, Duong River, and Da River into the target systems to maintain continuous flow and reduce flooding. The plan also seeks to strictly control pollution sources, aiming for 100% of industrial zones to have compliant wastewater treatment infrastructure and for 70% of urban domestic wastewater to be collected and treated by 2035.
To fund these large-scale efforts, the government intends to pilot public-private partnership (PPP) mechanisms to mobilize social resources and private sector participation. Local authorities, including representatives from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, and Ninh Binh, are involved in the coordination of these efforts to ensure sustainable water security and improved urban development.
