Vietnam pledges talks with US over goods transshipment concerns

Vietnam has pledged to engage in constructive dialogue with the United States to address concerns regarding the transshipment of goods. Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated that Hanoi intends to maintain communication with Washington within the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to ensure stable, mutually beneficial economic and trade relations and to foster a transparent investment environment.

The discussions follow reports from Washington indicating significant losses in US tariff revenue. The White House estimated that between $19 billion and $26 billion is lost annually due to goods, largely originating from China, being transshipped through third countries to evade import duties. Vietnam, along with Mexico and India, was identified as a major hub for these practices, with an estimated $67 billion worth of US-bound goods transshipped through these nations in 2025. As the United States increases scrutiny to prevent tariff evasion, Vietnam’s stance signals a commitment to working with US authorities while protecting bilateral trade growth.
