Vietnam police detain suspects in Vinh Long boat theft and Can Tho fraud cases

Ngô Văn Mười Hai, a 36‑year‑old resident of Đồng Nai, was placed in emergency detention by Vĩnh Long police after investigators said he stole a small boat and fishing gear from a resident in Long Vĩnh district. He allegedly used the stolen equipment to fish on the Kinh Đào River and nearby rivulets before being stopped by local officers on 6 July. Hai confessed to the theft and returned the items, and the case remains under investigation.

Đặng Quang Vinh, a 27‑year‑old from Cần Thơ, was formally charged and detained for an alleged fraud scheme that exploited fake Zalo accounts impersonating staff of retail chains Bách Hóa Xanh and Thế Giới Di Động. Between August 2023 and October 2024, Vinh persuaded a victim to transfer a total of 1.33 billion VND to multiple bank accounts he controlled, claiming the money was needed for job placement fees. The funds were later used for online gambling, debt repayment, and personal expenses. Vinh has admitted the wrongdoing and faces prosecution.
