Vietnam police dismantle Tatao Live AI livestream fraud scheme
Vietnamese authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the Tatao Live platform following allegations of a massive fraudulent scheme. Using the guise of an “AI retail ecosystem,” the group lured over 40,000 participants through a platform claiming to use artificial intelligence to create virtual characters for livestream sales.
Investigators report that the group mobilized 407 billion VND, with an initial estimated misappropriation of over 220 billion VND. The scheme utilized various digital channels, including Facebook, YouTube, Zalo, and Zoom, to promote the platform and build credibility through official business registrations, tax codes, and frequent online conferences.
To attract investors, the group organized reward programs involving cash, motorcycles, and electronic devices. The Nghe An Provincial Police, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security and Lao Cai Provincial Police, have initiated proceedings for “using computer networks, telecommunications networks, or electronic means to appropriate property and money laundering,” resulting in the indictment of seven suspects.
