Vietnam authorities dismantle transnational drug ring with 1.1-ton ketamine seizure
Vietnamese authorities, including the C04 Drug Crime Investigation Department and the Vietnam Coast Guard, have dismantled a major transnational drug trafficking ring. The operation targeted a fishing vessel, BT-92066-TS, in waters near the Vietnam-Indonesia border.
During the inspection, officials discovered 1,160 packages of ketamine disguised as tea bags hidden within the vessel's hull. The seized ketamine weighed approximately 1.16 tons, with an estimated black market value of 800 billion VND.
Investigations revealed that foreign nationals collaborated with Vietnamese citizens to transport the drugs through Vietnamese waters to a third country. A key suspect, Trần Ngọc Danh, was apprehended while attempting to flee the country via a small border crossing.
Following the seizure, Danh reportedly attempted to bribe officials with 1.2 billion VND to recover the drugs. Consequently, authorities have prosecuted nine defendants: four for illegal drug transport, four for brokering bribery, and one for both bribery and drug transport.
