Vietnam President To Lam commemorates war martyrs amid broader economic and tourism push

President To Lam, who serves as both General Secretary of the Party and State President, visited several memorial sites in Ho Chi Minh City on the 79th anniversary of the war invalids day. He laid flowers and incense at Park Le Thi Rieng, inspected excavation work at a 1968 spring offensive site, and stressed that locating, repatriating and identifying martyrs is a sacred duty to the nation. He praised the joint efforts of the Party, armed forces, scientists and local authorities in honouring those who fell for Vietnam’s reunification.

At the same time, Vietnam is pursuing a range of economic and tourism initiatives. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung highlighted untapped potential in relations with Greece, calling the European partner a traditional ally. The Ly Son Special Zone reported a tourism boom with roughly 120,000 visitors since the start of the year. Six months after its launch, the Vietnam International Financial Centre in Ho Chi Minh City secured about US$20 billion in investment pledges and is now working to convert them into actual capital inflows. UNESCO’s representative noted digital technology’s role in preserving Vietnam’s cultural heritage, while a recent speedboat capsizing off Phu Quoc saw the last victim, an Indian passenger, showing positive recovery. A Vietnamese delegation also visited Laos to strengthen cooperation on overseas community affairs, and To Lam urged Son La province to develop as a centre for ecological agriculture, agro‑processing and tourism.
