Vietnam President To Lam welcomes former Google chair Eric Schmidt to discuss AI cooperation
General Secretary and President of Vietnam, To Lam, met former Google chairman Eric Schmidt and an AI expert delegation in Hanoi on 5 June 2026. In the meeting, To Lam highlighted Vietnam’s drive to transform its growth model through science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, aiming to become a high‑income nation by 2045. He thanked Schmidt for his contributions to global AI development and urged continued support for building a national AI vision, policies and ecosystem, linking international resources, technology firms, investment funds and research institutes.
Schmidt praised Vietnam’s “favorable conditions for AI development”, noting the country’s young, dynamic workforce and growing innovation environment. He reported ongoing cooperation on projects such as the Tapestry national multi‑platform model, a Data OS and physical production initiative, and AI applications in basic education, and pledged to leverage his network to further connect Vietnam with suitable partners.
The meeting formed part of a broader series of high‑level engagements in Vietnam, underscoring the country’s effort to attract foreign expertise and investment to accelerate its artificial‑intelligence sector.
