Vietnam President To Lam outlines economic reform at July government meeting

On 4 July 2024, Vietnam’s President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam attended the regular Government meeting for June and an online conference with provincial leaders. In his address he stressed the need for rapid, sustainable and self‑reliant growth, higher living standards, and strengthened macro‑economic resilience. He identified six structural challenges, notably the country’s heavy reliance on foreign‑direct‑investment‑driven export sectors, persistent trade imbalances, and the need for more effective institutional mechanisms and accurate statistical data.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung highlighted a volatile global context with intensified strategic competition, geopolitical and non‑traditional security risks, climate change pressures and disruptions to supply chains from the Middle‑East conflict. The meeting reviewed positive economic performance for the first half of 2026 and called for policy proposals to boost science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, while urging reforms that break institutional bottlenecks and improve the quality of official statistics.
