Vietnam projected to surpass Indonesia in GDP per capita by 2026

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that Vietnam will overtake Indonesia in nominal GDP per capita by 2026. Vietnam’s output per person is projected to reach US$5,259, compared to Indonesia’s US$5,153. This shift would rank Vietnam fifth among ASEAN economies, following Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Vietnam’s economic momentum is supported by strong growth in high-tech manufacturing, particularly in semiconductors and electronics. Major foreign investors, including Samsung Electronics and Foxconn, have expanded operations in the country. Additionally, the Vietnamese government is driving growth through significant public investment in transportation infrastructure, such as roads and airports, and a program to boost domestic consumer goods.

Economic forecasts for Vietnam remain highly positive. Standard Chartered predicts GDP growth could reach 11% by 2027, while the Asian Development Bank and United Overseas Bank have also raised their growth projections for the country. Despite these prospects, officials noted that macroeconomic management and inflation control remain key challenges for the government.
