Vietnam proposes 28 TOD zones along Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway

The My Thuan Project Management Board has proposed the development of 28 Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zones along the planned Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line. This initiative aims to integrate urban, commercial, and service sectors with the public transport system to optimize land use and investment efficiency.

The proposed 175km railway line will pass through Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, and Can Tho. The TOD plan includes 8 zones in Ho Chi Minh City, 4 in Tay Ninh, 7 in Dong Thap, 2 in Vinh Long, and 7 in Can Tho, with the largest zone in Can Tho exceeding 1,238 hectares.

The railway project is currently undergoing a pre-feasibility study for its first phase, with an estimated total investment of over 171 trillion VND. The project is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for investment policy consideration in August, with construction slated to begin in 2028 and completion targeted for 2035. The line is designed for passenger speeds up to 160km/h and freight speeds up to 120km/h.
