Vietnam proposes more DNA testing units for martyr remains

The Ministry of Home Affairs is proposing a draft resolution to amend Resolution No. 26/2026/NQ-CP, aiming to accelerate the identification of martyr remains through DNA testing. Currently, only about 210 samples have been processed, a figure considered very low compared to the approximately 18,000 samples requiring testing.

The proposal seeks to create a legal framework to involve non-public DNA testing units to increase capacity and shorten result turnaround times. Under the plan, the Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Health, and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology would assign their respective DNA testing units to analyze remains based on territories assigned by the National Steering Committee. These agencies would also be permitted to select additional DNA testing units to coordinate efforts, provided that selection and funding comply with state budget and bidding laws.
