Vietnam expands tourism and retail sectors through medical and outlet developments

Vietnam is seeing significant shifts and opportunities across several tourism and retail sectors. In the medical tourism sector, the market presents a major growth opportunity, as Vietnamese citizens currently spend approximately 2-3 billion USD annually on medical services abroad, exceeding the 1-2 billion USD revenue generated from international medical tourists.

In retail, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing a scheme to pilot outlet shopping centers between 2026 and 2030. Ho Chi Minh City is positioned to lead this initiative, with potential locations situated along the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway to capture travelers from the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport. These centers are expected to dedicate at least 30% of their area to high-quality Vietnamese goods.

International tourism trends also show growth in specific niches. Phu Quoc has been named one of the top 10 trending islands for 2026 by Condé Nast Traveller Middle East, noted for its “affordable luxury” appeal. Additionally, tourism between Vietnam and Taiwan is increasing, with Vietnamese visitors to Taiwan rising by over 10% in the first half of 2026, prompting Taiwanese delegations to hold major trade connection workshops in Ho Chi Minh City to promote cultural and high-end travel experiences.
