Vietnam proposes restructuring criminal investigation agencies

During an extraordinary session of the 16th National Assembly on August 20, Minister of Public Security Lương Tam Quang presented a proposal for the amended Law on Organization of Criminal Investigation Agencies.

A key component of the proposal is the recommendation to discontinue the investigative agency under the Supreme People's Procuracy. The authority currently held by the Supreme People's Procuracy's investigative body would be transferred to the investigative agencies of the People's Public Security and the People's Army.

Other proposed structural changes include: - Abolishing the district-level Police Investigation Agency to align with the new organizational model of the People's Public Security. - Granting the Minister of Public Security the power to detail the organization and apparatus of the People's Public Security investigative agencies. - Granting the Minister of National Defence the power to detail the organization and apparatus of investigative agencies within the People's Army. - Expanding the authority of provincial-level Police Investigation Agencies to investigate specific criminal cases under the jurisdiction of the People's Courts.

To ensure flexibility and unity, the proposal suggests that the Minister of Public Security and the Minister of National Defence be responsible for assigning and transferring investigative duties within their respective organizations.
