Vietnam prosecutes man over fatal resort pool accident

Authorities in Lam Dong province have officially prosecuted Nguyen Quoc Quan, born in 1961, in connection with the 2022 death of an 11-year-old Japanese boy at the Centara Mirage Resort Mui Ne.

Mr. Quan is charged with violating construction regulations that caused serious consequences, specifically regarding the design, construction, or use of materials and machinery. The decision to prosecute was approved by the Lam Dong Provincial People's Procuracy on August 5, 2026, following the reopening of the investigation in late June 2026.

The incident occurred on April 5, 2022, when Hanawa Yukiji was reportedly sucked into a pool grate at the resort's lazy river pool. Despite rescue efforts and emergency medical intervention, the child passed away. The case has seen multiple stages of investigation, including previous suspensions and reinstatements, following conflicting forensic conclusions regarding the pool's suction mechanics and construction standards.
