Vietnam prosecutors indict 31 people in VTM and VNS corruption case
The Supreme People’s Procuracy of Vietnam has issued an indictment against 31 defendants involved in a major corruption case at Viet Trung Mineral and Metallurgy Co., Ltd. (VTM) and the Vietnam Steel Corporation (VNS).
Key defendants include Bui Thanh Binh, former General Director of VTM, who faces charges of violating regulations on state asset management, receiving bribes, and causing damage to state property. He is also accused of receiving 62.2 billion VND in bribes and directing staff to manipulate costs to hide hundreds of billions of VND in shortages.
Former VNS Chairman Mai Van Tinh and former VNS General Director Dau Van Hung are charged with violating regulations on the management and use of state assets. Additionally, former Lao Cai provincial Vice Chairman Le Ngoc Hung and former Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Do Truong Giang face charges of abusing positions and powers.
The indictment details three primary violations: an EPC contract worth 160 million USD that allegedly caused over 532 billion VND in losses to shareholders, the sale of iron ore at below-market prices causing 434 billion VND in state losses, and irregularities in the purchase of coke at VTM.
