Vietnam provinces address aquaculture seed supply challenges

Aquaculture provinces in Vietnam, including Quang Ninh and Quang Ngai, are working to resolve bottlenecks in the production of high-quality aquatic seeds to ensure sustainable industry growth.

In Quang Ninh, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has identified securing reliable seed sources as a priority to support large-scale, high-tech production. While the province has 19 certified production facilities meeting 100% of shrimp seed demand and 90% of freshwater seed demand, it still only supplies about 35% of the required marine fish and mollusk seeds. Local successes, such as Viet-Uc Quang Ninh Co., Ltd., have helped mitigate previous shortages in shrimp seeds.

Similarly, Quang Ngai faces a significant gap between local production capacity and demand. The province requires approximately 1.5 billion shrimp seeds annually, yet only has three certified production facilities, with only one specializing in saltwater and brackish water species. This forces most farmers to source branded seeds from other provinces. To improve efficiency and disease resistance, authorities are emphasizing the application of science and technology to enhance local seed quality and adaptability.
