Vietnam provinces Lạng Sơn and Khánh Hòa cut public school numbers

The Education and Training Department of Lạng Sơn province announced a plan to reduce its public school network from 637 schools to about 349, a cut of 288 schools or roughly 45.2%. The restructuring will affect more than 400 surplus education officials and is slated for approval by the provincial People's Committee, with implementation expected for the 2026‑2027 school year. A pilot of the consolidation was already carried out in four border communes (Mẫu Sơn, Quốc Khánh, Kiên Mộc, Khuất Xá).

In Khánh Hòa province, officials confirmed a reduction of 271 public schools out of 728, leaving 457 schools operational from the 2026‑2027 academic year. Surplus staff will be reassigned to other government departments or encouraged to return to teaching roles, and excess school facilities will be repurposed as community education centers or cultural houses. The province will adopt two models of school consolidation, creating larger schools with multiple branches.

Both provinces are among fifteen locations selected by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training to pilot a nationwide reorganization of public education facilities, with the new management model to begin on 1 July 2026.
