Vietnam provinces restructure community spaces after village mergers

Following the merger of villages and hamlets in several provinces, local authorities are addressing challenges regarding community infrastructure. In Nghệ An, the administrative reorganization has resulted in the consolidation of 3,797 old units into 2,026 new ones. This has created a paradox where the total number of cultural houses is sufficient, but many lack the capacity or central location to serve the increased population of the newly merged units.

To resolve this, local officials are prioritizing the use of cultural houses that are centrally located and possess better facilities. Rather than liquidating unused assets, authorities are looking to repurpose older buildings for other community functions, such as traditional halls or sports areas, to prevent degradation and ensure efficient use of state investment.

Similar issues have been noted in Lai Châu, where increased population density following mergers has led to a shortage of adequate communal spaces for meetings and social activities.
