Vietnam pushes green credit and hydrogen projects to cut emissions
Vietnam is promoting green financing and clean‑energy technologies to sustain economic growth. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam urged the diplomatic sector to provide strategic advice and timely action, while Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang led a roundtable in Amsterdam with Dutch firms to explore investment opportunities in the country.
At a recent “Hydrogen Energy and Zero‑Emission Industry” forum in Hanoi, officials highlighted green hydrogen as a strategic solution for heavy industry, long‑distance transport, maritime shipping and aviation. Vietnam aims to build a full hydrogen value chain—production, storage, transport, distribution and use—to meet domestic demand and become a regional clean‑energy hub. Currently, most hydrogen output is brown or gray, serving refineries and fertilizer plants, and commercial green or blue projects are still absent. Experts cited geological advantages, offshore wind potential and the need for supportive policies, tax incentives and financing to bridge cost gaps.
Challenges include high investment costs, freshwater supply for electrolysis and offshore operation and maintenance, but officials see hydrogen complementing electric vehicles and reducing reliance on imported LNG and coal.
